What changes in the trip
BMP. Uncompressed, so enormous: a plain dump of every pixel. Almost nothing produces them any more, and converting one to almost anything else will shrink it dramatically.
PNG. Lossless and keeps transparency, which makes it right for logos, screenshots and anything with text or hard edges. The cost is size: a photograph saved as PNG is usually several times larger than the same photograph as JPG.
